\u2026 A HISTORY<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sheriff Hubert Williams became the owner of the house around 1845 and lived there until 1890. The house was then passed down to his heirs and was rented in 1910 to Major Tancr\u00e8de Rinfret, then to Samuel Rinfret\u2019s widow and finally to R. Mackey Rinfret. In 1913, the house is sold to Mrs J.S. Painchaud.<\/p>\n

Houses used to be built by the curbs inside the walled-city but also in the neighbouring areas. Those houses had back yards where one could find the outbuildings, the stables and the hangars.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Since you could rarely find back alleys, the only way to access the backyard was through a coach gate from the street. Some buildings still have coach gates but many were closed and converted into living space.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When you walk the streets of Old Qu\u00e9bec, if you pay attention, you will see remains of the old coach gates. In fact, on stone walls, you may detect the former presence of an arch no longer in use but that reveals the presence of an old coach gate.<\/p>\n
